Skin bleaching, also commonly known as skin lightening, is a cosmetic treatment that’s done to lighten the skin tone. Alternatively, skin bleaching treatments can also be taken to achieve an even skin complexion. This is done by reducing the amount of melanin (a pigment) in the skin.
For therapeutic or medical purposes, skin bleaching is performed on people who have melasma, freckles, vitiligo, age spots, or blemishes. These conditions can take fairly long to heal but, with the right medication taken under the guidance of a dermatologist, they are treatable. Sometimes, they can also be treated using natural skin care products.
How Skin Bleaching Is Done?
Often, skin bleaching procedures are geared towards inhibiting the production of tyrosinase, an enzyme that controls how much melanin is produced in the skin. In most cases, topical creams, gels or lotions are used in combination with a sunscreen product to inhibit melanin production.
In extreme cases, skin bleaching is done by the help of exfoliants or chemical peels. Increased usage of these kinds of skin lightening treatments can have adverse effects on certain areas of the skin such as eyes, ears, fingers, and toes. Also, thinning of the facial skin may be permanently and potentially damaging side-effect.
In some cases, laser treatments are used. Usually, this is done to treat skin conditions such as melasma. When performed for cosmetic reasons, laser treatments have been reported to not have consistent outcomes. Laser treatments for skin lightening are not only very expensive, but people with dark skin tones also become prone to various skin problems.
Are there any Natural Skin Bleaching methods?
The chemical induced methods for skin bleach treatments may work fast, but can also cause some serious side-effects, depending on how your skin reacts to them or if they contain any allergens that your skin might be sensitive to. That’s why it’s always better to seek out natural skin bleaching treatments. Some natural procedures are so simple and basic that they can also be done at home.
Yogurt, when used with dried orange peels or with tomatoes & oats, can be a very effective skin lightening agent. Yogurt helps reduce the appearance of blemishes, while at the same time, moisturizing your skin. You can mix the above said ingredients in minutes and apply them as a face mask. Doing this can also help in removing skin tans caused by exposure to the sun.
Oats, honey, and lemon are found to be very effective in removing dead skin cells and evening out the skin complexion. These natural skin bleaching methods can also boost hydration to the skin and make it glow. However, it’s best to ‘test use’ them on a small area on your hands first to see if they cause any irritation or itching, before applying them all over.
Whatever you try, please ensure that the ingredients used in your skin bleaching solution are derived from natural extracts; and are free from substances like mercury (very dangerous to the skin), hydroquinone (has side effects in the long term), steroids or other toxic pigmentation agents.
